SHIP – Social hållbarhet i praktiken

Projekt:

Branschprogrammet hållbar sjöfart

Sammanfattning:
This pre-study was conducted in collaboration between Linnaeus University and Chalmers University of Technology within the Swedish Transport Administration’s program Sustainable Shipping, run by Lighthouse.
The purpose of the pre-study is to map how actors in the Swedish shipping industry work on issues related to social sustainability. The overall objective is to identify and communicate good practices, stimulate collaboration, and identify knowledge gaps and propose future work.
The results presented in this report is based on the following research activities: mapping of which Sustainable Development Goals described in Agenda 2030 to include in the study; mapping of how social sustainability is encompassed in the universities’ maritime education programs; and interviews with 18 industry representatives regarding their respective organizations’ strategic and practical sustainability work.
The results clearly illustrate how complex the concept of sustainability is. When it is not operationalized, sustainable shipping is primarily associated with ecological sustainability, often with a focus on climate issues.
No specific examples of how the social sustainability goals in Agenda 2030 are related to the organizations’ strategic work could be identified. On the other hand, examples of social sustainability are given through areas that are primarily related to occupational health and safety, gender equality and diversity. However, there are no examples that link to social values at societal level, such as the effect of reduced emissions on public health.
Good practices include policy documents and company values and norms, but an explicit strategy, action plan and practical tools are often lacking.
The business value of social sustainability is mainly described in terms of recruitment and skills provision. Mainly through examples of how improved working conditions, gender equality diversity have the potential to strengthen the business value in a long-term perspective.
The mapping of the marine engineering and master mariner programs at Linnaeus University and Chalmers showed that about ten courses could be linked to one or more social sustainability development goals. The goals of decent working conditions and growth (SDG 8), as well as good health and well-being (SDG 3) are most prominent in the learning objectives. There were no substantial differences between the two universities. However, it was noted that the marine engineering program had fewer learning objectives that could be linked to the sustainability goals.
Overall, this study has identified important gaps and areas for improvement of the social sustainability work. The development of sustainable shipping requires more

elaborate analyses of how the social dimensions are affected by decisions at political, industry and operational business levels. Social values need to be made explicit and visible during planning, management, implementation, and follow-up of the sustainability work.
Lighthouse is suggested as the arena where discussions about goals and indicators for social sustainability can be arranged, and where different actors can exchange experiences in a collective learning process. The discussions need to cover socio-technical as well as socio-economic perspectives. Gradually, the ability to handle the complexity of the sustainability work can be improved.
The report gives several suggestions on issues that need to be discussed, interpreted, and translated into a shipping context, in order to be implemented and put into practice.
